Gambhira is an ancient form of performance, linked with folk rituals of worship. Today the form is associated with critical comments on socio-political issues from common people, mostly below the poverty line.

Tarapada follows his guru Matarbabu or the reputed Jogendranath Choudhury, one of the last great exponents of Gambhira.
